Following Websites with RSS Feeds

What RSS feeds are, how to find a site's feed, and how to follow it in Pincone — unread counts, catching up, and saving posts to folders.

Feeds bring the web to you. Subscribe to a blog, a news site, or your favorite author, and new posts show up in Pincone — no visiting twenty sites to check what's new.

What's an RSS feed, anyway?

An RSS feed is a machine-readable list of a site's latest posts, living at its own web address. The site updates it automatically with every new post, and feed readers — like Pincone — check it so you don't have to. No account, no algorithm, no ads: just the posts, in order, from the sites you chose.

Far more of the web has feeds than you'd guess: nearly every blog and news site, everything built on WordPress, Ghost, or Substack, most magazines — even every podcast is secretly an RSS feed.

Finding a site's feed

Pincone needs the feed's exact address (not just the site's homepage), so here's where to look:

  • The site itself — an RSS icon or an "RSS" / "Feed" link, usually in the footer.
  • Common addresses — many platforms use predictable ones: WordPress and Substack sites serve a feed at the site address plus /feed, Ghost blogs at /rss, Medium authors at medium.com/feed/@username. Worth a guess before hunting further.
  • The page source — if all else fails, right-click → view source and search for "rss" or "atom"; the feed address hides in the page's head.

Admittedly the fiddliest part of feeds — but you only do it once per site, and we're happy to help if a feed is playing hide-and-seek.

Adding it to Pincone

Click New in the sidebar, choose to add a feed, and paste the feed's address. Pincone fetches it, shows you what it found, and you're subscribed. Your feeds appear in the sidebar's Library, each with its own page.

When you add a feed, you can also import the posts the site has already published, so the feed doesn't start out empty.

Keeping up

Feeds with new posts show an unread count in the sidebar. Open the feed and you'll see a You're all caught up divider marking where you left off — everything above it is new since your last visit. Opening a feed marks it as read.

The search window (Cmd+K) collects all your unread feeds and inboxes in one place, so you can catch up from anywhere.

Keeping the good ones

A feed is a river — posts flow through, and most float past. When one's worth keeping, save it to a folder and it becomes a regular link in your collection, safe from the current. Look for the folder option on any post.

Behind on a feed you care about?

Hit Set Aside in the feed's title bar. The feed jumps to the very top of your sidebar wearing a purple sticker, and stays there — visits and mark-as-read don't clear it — until you've caught up and take the flag off yourself. The full story (and how it differs from pinning) is in Pinning and Set Aside.

Housekeeping

From a feed's ••• menu you can rename it, pin it to the top of your Library, clear out its items, or unsubscribe entirely. Unsubscribing removes the feed and its items — anything you saved to a folder stays put. And if a feed seems stuck, see When a Feed Stops Updating.
